Shock and dismay engulfs the people of Laikipia County in
Kenya when three boys were reported to have drowned in a dam found in Nyahurur
Golf Club on Sunday 3rd February 2019. The dam is located in Maina Slums.
The three boys aged between 9 and 12 rushed out to see the
helicopter alleged to have carried the deputy president of Kenya, William Ruto,
who was attending a fund raising event in a close region, Nayndarua county.
The chopper landed on the Golf Club before the DP headed to
Nyandarua town by road, which was a drive away.
“It is likely that the three boys drowned in the dam, after
deciding to swim in the dam when they failed to see the helicopter. The twins
drowned first and the other boy drowned when attempting to rescue the two boys,”
Said Ms. Wambui, a neighbor to the mother of the twins.
According to Ms. Wambui, the mother to the twins said that she
had given the boys permission to go and see the helicopter that had landed on
the Golf Club.
Confirming the issue, Igwamiti Assistant County Commissioner,
Wambui Irungu claimed that the two boys jumped into the dam to swim, but were
overwhelmed by the strong water and the third boy also drowned in an attempt to
rescue the two boys.
Villagers came and retrieved the twins’ bodies from the dam.
The villagers had asked the Golf Club to fence the dam to prevent any incidence
of drowning, but this fell on deaf ears. Parents were also advised to warn
their children from entering private property without permission.
The Laikipia County Government Fire Engines were called to
pump water out to retrieve the body of the third boy from the dam, while the two
bodies retrieved were taken to Nyahururu County Referral Hospital Mortuary.
